When area codes were originally set up, they were very few in comparison to the number of them you can find today. California alone has one of the highest numbers of codes within the country. The area code 916 was one of the original three that were assigned to the state back in 1947. This was split a few years later in 1958 to form the code 209. After that, things remained the same until just a decade ago.
It became apparent that this area of the country would need a new area code, and the 530 was born. This left 916 covering only a very small piece of land by comparison to 530, but the population was very high. This is because 916 now only covers the areas of the state capitol of California, the city of Sacramento. This code also covers most of the surrounding suburbs of that city as well.
The second split that relegated 916 to a rather small geographical area was due to the population of the area and the demand for new phone numbers. Because Sacramento is the state capitol, the population is high. More numbers were needed for both personal and business use. Unlike some other large cities in California, like Los Angeles for example, this area code is not split anywhere in the city. That makes for much less confusion for residents.
Besides Sacramento, there are some other cities within the area code 916 in the counties of Placer, Sacramento, and Yolo. These include places like Lincoln, Roseville, Fair Oaks, Laguna, Rosemont, and Clarksburg. Many of the calls coming from this area code are coming from any of these cities or their surrounding areas. You can tell more about location by looking up the prefix within the area code 916.
If location as determined by prefix is not enough information for you, you can always use many online tools to find out where any mysterious calls are originating. A reverse search though the yellow or white pages can give you a name and address at times. If you have no luck there, the number in question may be a mobile number. In that case, use reverse cell phone lookup to see what you can find.
